Album Review: pMad – I in Power (Self Released)

Released on April 30th, 2023, ‘I in Power’ is a collection of eight brand new original tracks from Irish post punk, gothic rock artist pMad. The album will only be available as a download or on CD until all the singles have been released in 2024.

 

 

It’s been a lot of fun finding out just who pMad is and what the artist is capable of. Across several singles and a previous album, it’s been a journey of discovery. Which continues with this new release, I in Power.

It’s a dramatic start with Confession as pMad showcases an exciting ability to transcend genre-limitations. Simply put, this is a daring example of experimentation and catchy grandeur. It’s an exceptional introduction to I in Power.

Up next is Down, a track we previously described in a Single Slam as danceable and groovy, in a darkly electro-goth way. It’s got an energetic pace, something that works even better follow the opener, a foot-tapping beat, and catchy vocals, expressed with passionate lyrical content.

Then it’s Electric and Fire. The former is heavier on the electro-goth vibes, moody but with some layered melodies that really touch the soul. Whereas the latter is another track we’re already quite familiar with. Describing it previously in a Single Slam as an eccentric and exciting effort, but also one that is quite pretty, and delivers its message with aplomb. It is one of pMad’s best tracks, which says a lot as this album is strong from beginning to end.

That and the fact you never really know what will come next. Case in point, the faster punk-rock driven Fury and Missing. Two tracks that focus on the guitar and have snappier tempos. Only to be followed by the devilish 80s goth-club vibes of Opinion. Far more fun than it has any right to be.

Which brings us to the end and one last hard rocking number in the form of Sword. The rhythm given a different flavour via a more urgent tempo and balanced by pMad’s goth-toned vocal style. A satisfying closing track to an extremely satisfying album.
