Album Review: Pistols At Dawn – Ascension (JFL Entertainment)

Ascension is the new album from American hard rockers Pistols at Dawn. The album is set for release through JFL Entertainment on August 19th, 2022.

One of the reasons why any new music from Pistols at Dawn is early anticipated is because the four-piece are way more than just a ‘hard rock’ band. That genre constraint is completely ignored as the band delve into varied territories and emerge with what can rightfully be called their own sound.

A blend of rock, metal, grunge and progressive, Ascension finds Pistols at Dawn on a creative high and delivering eight top-shelf bangers. From the moment the infectious groove and thick riff sound of Under the Surface kicks off. To the moment the thrilling Fly comes along, where the chorus is simply massive sounding. Pistols at Dawn set the bar so very high for themselves.

Top those two tracks? That’s a challenge Pistols at Dawn are happy to meet with some serious aplomb as Keep Me Guessing has animated rhythm and the vocals are on fire. Before For You goes for a more melodic grandness that has a ton of heart and soul to it. Be warned, you might find yourself left a little emotional by it.

Moody and morose but with that inarguable Pistols at Dawn infectiousness, The Truth and Gravity showcase murkier and mucky groove. The former has a late-point switch, leading to a fantastic bout of guitar soloing, that just slays. Whereas the latter’s bass tone is really serrated and the vocals soar into a head-banging inducing chorus.

Need some energy? Don’t let the temperamental verses of Get Away trick you, the chorus is pure pace and very bouncy. One of the more ‘radio-friendly’ sounding tracks, it has a real crossover feel, thanks to the kick-ass chorus. Which then brings us to the end and the massive finale of Dictator. Where Pistols at Dawn deliver one last raucous blast of groovy hard rock that never quite goes in the direction you expect. Such is the band’s ability to twist genres to their need.

The best thing Pistols at Dawn has put out? It’s in with a serious shout.
