Album Review: Pierce The Veil – The Jaws Of Life (Fearless Records)

Platinum-selling powerhouse Pierce the Veil will release their fifth album ‘The Jaws of Life’ on February 10th, 2023, via Fearless Records.

A band capable of making appealing anthems in their sleep, Pierce the Veil have built up a huge and dedicated fanbase and with this album, aim to please everyone. Doing so by delivering anthem after anthem, blending modern rock ideas with poppy melodies, emo-touches, post-hardcore cues, and experimenting with their style throughout.

Happily, this new album is not a re-thread of old ideas but also doesn’t see the band move too far out of their comfort zone either. There’s variety here and that will mean some tracks over others will resonate with different people. Super-fan or not, The Jaws of Life has a lot to offer and a lot to unpack.

How good this that, though? It’s far more interesting than a solid Pierce the Veil album that doesn’t elect much feeling beyond – it’s good. The Jaws of Life breeds discussion and bleeds passion. Even if it’s not always something that works on a personal level.

So, what does work? Death of an Executioner is a catchy and anthemic opener and brings the new album to life. Even When I’m Not With You is extremely pretty and highly emotional. Emergency Contact is pop-punk/rock infectiousness that will put a stupid smile on most faces. Likewise, to the massive singalong that is Damn the Man, Save the Empire and the body-shaking rhythm of So Far So Fake.

These are some of the major highlights of the album, tracks that stick in the mind afterwards. Though, overall, Pierce the Veil do deliver a memorable listen with even the ‘less’ interesting tracks having something that hooks in. Criticism of the record simply comes down to personal taste as it’s clear to anyone that The Jaws of Life is aimed at a mass market and will surely succeed exactly where previous Pierce the Veil records have before.
