Album Review: Phobetor – Through Deepest Fears And Darkest Minds (Black Jasper Records)
Explorers of fear blighted nights and death ridden days, Phobetor have returned with their second album of blackened death metal. Through Deepest Fears and Darkest Minds is out on December 13th via Black Jasper Records.
A nightmarish blast of blackened death metal, Phobetor’s Through Deepest Fears and Darkest Minds is an apt title as it oozes darkness.
There’s nothing feel good about this one but that doesn’t mean it isn’t enjoyable. After all, it’s a hyperactive blast of heavy noise and that is always going to sit pretty in the minds of heavy metal fans. The classic combination of black metal and death metal also gets a bit of a shakeup as there are moments that have a ‘black and roll’ feel to them too.
Fast and heavy, dark and curdled, mean and horror-infused… it’s what Phobetor do. They like to haunt your dreams and cause a cold sweat to break out. Tracks like Solace in Darkness, Screaming Silence, Your Empty Shadow and As Dreams Decay are as chilling and harsh as you could possibly hope it to be.
Though, the album does suffer from bleeding. Where a similar tone and style begins to sound similar and attention starts to slip. Forgivable though, as Phobetor are constantly and consistently hitting hard. There’s no let up and no fear of the dark with this band. They are comfortable in it, they thrive in it.
