Album Review: Petrolio – L+Esistenze (Self Released)
Petrolio was founded in 2015 by Enrico Cerrato, a musician already active in metal, industrial and jazz/noise/punk scenes. Petrolio first released “Di Cosa Si Nasce” in April 2017 to great success.
Collabrating with an impressive list of artists, Petrolio followed that up with L+Esistenze. Released in October 2018.
Six artists have participated in the realisation of this album and devoured Petrolio sounds and noises giving life to 12 pieces, each one characterised by the artistic attitude of each musician.
The following projects have taken part in this adventure… Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten, Automat, AADK, Soundscapes), Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo ((r), Almagest !, Blind Cave Salamander, Coypu, Larsen, XXL), Aidan Baker (Nadja), Sigillum S, MaiMaiMai and N Ran.
A dark, sickly listen. Describing this album is no easy task as Petrolio is an amalgamation of effects and noise that sits uncomfortably in the industrial sub-genre for the most part. Whereas the opener Ne Tuez Pas Les Anges has a little more lightness to it, LA Maladie Connue is all darkness and oppression.
We then get a wonderfully atmospheric and melodic track in Scindere 2 Animes. The highlight of the album as the freshness washes over and lifts the soul up high.
It’s needed as the fuzziness and dub-step beats of Fish Fetish take things in a somewhat different direction even if there is melody in the background. It’s nice sounding but buried under a mound of eye-watering fuzz and noise.
The latter half is of the album continues to prove to be very strong though as L’Eterno Non E Per Sempre also steps up providing a unique blend of whining effects, atmospheres and noise. Before Cerecala E Seta wraps things up.
The final track of a unique listen, it doesn’t end in quite the way we’d have possibly hoped but it does lay on the darkness thickly. Enough so that it leaves an impression. As does the whole album.
