Album Review: Perpetua – Resurgence (Seek And Strike)
Perpetua, the burgeoning metallic force from Scotland, will release their new album ‘Resurgence’ on March 22nd, 2024, via Seek and Strike.
With scathing intensity, a solid amount of technicality, and with elements of anthemic metal, Perpetua’s Resurgence is undoubtedly a step forward for the Scottish metal band. One that showcases a creative and modernised approach to heavy music. While you can hear elements of their influences, they do more than enough to stand out as a band you want to head bang to.
Following an atmospheric intro with sinister undertones (the title track), Perpetua come screaming out of the starting blocks with a punishing heavyweight track in the form of Resolve. With a wide array of riffs, some impressive hooky moments, meaty percussion, and throat ripping vocals, it sets the bar high for Perpetua’s heavy sound. You’re going to feel this one.
Whereas that track had a more measured approach to the pounding power this album holds, The Hell it Brings comes from a more manic place. The guitar rhythms are wild here, but it’s fascinating to hear new layers sneaking in too. Such as some cleaner vocals.
Then along comes Tethered, Overcome, and Human to batter the mind over and over again. Perpetua delivering a cacophony of heavy metal anthems with some absolutely blistering drumming, big choruses, and more riffs than any band should have to offer. The middle part of this album is thrilling, and it shows just how talented this band is when they can keep the attention so focused and things sounding so interesting.
That isn’t changing with the smashing and crashing sound of Trapped Mind, were erratic rhythms gel with explosive flair. Nor is anyone going to be feeling disappointed by the emphatic brutishness of This is Retribution. Those vocals, which have shined throughout, are sounding even grimmer here.
Then there is the penultimate track, Forsaken. Arguably Perpetua at their most anthemic and accessible, thanks to the grander chorus. However, don’t be fooled, it still goes extremely hard. Before this excellent release wraps up with one last beastly head banger in the form of Alone in the Static. Perpetua ending things as they begun, in crunching and catchy fashion. Proving that they are a band everyone should be paying a fair bit more attention to.
