Album Review: Paradise In Flames – Devil’s Collection (Blood Blast)

Brazilian symphonic black metal titans Paradise In Flames will release their third album, Devil’s Collection, on the 16th October via Blood Blast (Nuclear Blast and Believe’s new distribution service).

Gothic grandeur spreads outwards like flames from an out of control fire as Nahemah’s Possession marks the arrival of the Devil’s Collection. The symphonic elements meshing nicely with a raw and violent black metal sound.

There’s a bit of Cradle of Filth, a bit of Dimmu Borgir and even a bit of Emperor thrown into the melting pot here. What emerges is not quite its own thing but certainly isn’t lacking ambition.

Reaching boiling stage already, I’m Sure Your Gods Have Seen This Before is a much more devastating effort. The frantic combo of drums and guitars turning things red hot. It has almost got a bit of thrash edge to it. Talking of hot though, Satan’s Law is a bit more of a sexy number. The thrust of the riffs and howl of the vocals sending the senses into overload before releasing it through an intense burst of pumping heavy speed.

Looking for a cool-down? It’s not coming. After all this the Devil’s Collection and the lord of darkness likes it red hot. Which is exactly what we get with the sweaty energy of It’s All Wrong and the wild, hellish symphonic landscape shown by Has Never Seen A World Without Wars.

Seemingly buoyed by that, The Tepes sees Paradise in Flames turn towards a lavish banquet of black metal horror. Like seeing a great table of rich and succulent meats only to be told it’s human flesh. Easily one of the strongest tracks simply by just how focused the band sound.

Followed by Ripping Off False Masks, Hell’s Now and Devil From the Sky. Something a tad simpler but just as destructive as everything that came before. A trio of tracks that don’t upset the balance but certainly deserve to be heard as part of the vulgar experience. The finale of No Life On Earth being just a piano led outro of emptiness.
