Album Review: Overlorde – Awaken The Fury (No Remorse Records)

Underground US power metal legends Overlorde return with their brand-new studio album, ‘Awaken the Fury’. Out on December 22nd via No Remorse Records.

Having released their debut EP in 1987, it’s been a journey of ups and downs for the power metal group, and Awaken the Fury is their first full-length release since 2004. They’re back though, and back with a hearty bang. This new album is the sound of a band energised and hungry, delivering ten screaming examples of head-banging metal gold.

Kicking off with the title track, there’s a wonderful bassy thrum in this track as the vocal/instrumental combo moves at a frenetic pace. A powerful and punchy start to the record and the perfect thing to get the blood pumping. Especially as the dynamism of Fire in the Sky and The Madness Within showcase a delightful level of progressive thinking. It’s an edge that makes Awaken the Fury stand out that little more.

Though when you’ve got head-bangers that walk the line between trad metal and power like Battle At Marathon and Destroy Us All, Overlorde don’t need many more edges to delight head-bangers around the world. Again, it must be mentioned that the bass sound of this record is absolutely killer.

Gargoyles is up next, and it finds Overlorde getting a little weird, daringly psychedelic almost. Although it is a track that transforms into something faster and heavier as it goes on. Then along comes Ashes to return things back to a more ‘familiar’ style, before Hammer Strike lives up to its name with a pounding hit of heavy metal goodness.

The album then coming to a banging end with the pairing of Paranoid Delusions and Migraine. Overlorde putting an emphatic stamp on their return and ensuring those who have stuck with them are richly rewarded.
