Album Review: Ov Shadows – The Darkness Between Stars (Black Market Metal Label)

Black Market Metal Label will release the upcoming new album from black metallers, Ov Shadows entitled ‘The Darkness Between Stars’. The album is due for release on February 23rd 2018.

The first thing that stands out almost immediately on this raw & rough record is the unbelievably intense drumming. Utterly shocking in its delivery, inhuman in its speed. The second thing is the blackness that surrounds everything else. The vocals howl like a freezing wind and the guitars alternate between ferocity & sombre melody. The Darkness Between Stars will make you sit up & take notice.

After an incredibly layered opening title track, things settle down for the more familiar but just as effective Bellowing Shadows. Ov Shadows don’t just deliver crushing black metal heaviness, they also bring a sense of wonder, beauty and melodrama to proceedings.

The Hanged Man, Disguised as Altruism, Ritual of the Natural Flame & Hordes Abiding the Narrator all bring brutalising & guttural fury while also providing mellow moments that allow a breather.

There isn’t a disappointing track on the album & as the longest song, A Sky in Vain finishes things off in skull crushing style. Both traditional & modern black metal fans will find themselves right at home here.
