Album Review: Ossuarium – Living Tomb (20 Buck Spin)
From 20 Buck Spin comes the debut album from death/doom heavyweights, Ossuarium. Titled ‘Living Tomb’, the album follows on the heels of the widely hailed ‘Calcified Trophies of Violence’ demo in 2017.
Raging violence and uncompromising noise, Ossuarium spit fire and brimstone across eight tracks of head-busting heaviness. Every single track is evil in delivery with deep and booming riffs and filth-encrusted vocals kicking off with Blaze of Bodies.
A horror show of heavy, the ferocity of the death metal elements isn’t overshadowed one bit by the depressing layer of doom. With titles like Vomiting Black Death and Writhing in Emptiness, the twisted darkness of the album should be clear before you’ve even hit play. However, it can’t prepare you for such a stomach-churning listen.
That the likes of Vomiting Black Death goes on for over seven minutes pushes the limits of just how much one person can take. It’s partly built on brilliance, part confidence and part uncompromising resolve. It all adds up to an album that few will forget even if it lacks the edge to really make it one of the best of the year.
The substantial meat of Corrosive Hallucinations is filling but after a while it starts to become cloying. This does harm its impact and how much later tracks really have an effect. A bit of a shame because for the most part, Ossuarium provide hefty punches to the gut leaving all who listen winded but grateful.
