Album Review: Ofermod – Mysterium Iniquitatis (Shadow Records/Regain Records)
Shadow Records (distributed & marketed by Regain Records) is proud to present Ofermod’s highly anticipated fifth album, Mysterium Iniquitatis, on CD, vinyl LP, and cassette tape formats. It will be released on December 3rd, 2021.
Blackened metal from the deepest and murkiest depths of hell. Ofermod’s initial emergence in 1996 may have been quickly halted but since 2008 they have been roaming the earth, spreading their darkness everywhere they could.
The orthodox black metal this band releases is as corruptible as ever and the no-frills approach continues to leave minds, bodies and souls shaken. The scathing vocals are harsh enough but then you have the instrumental fleshiness of this album. The buzzing of guitars akin to flies over a rotting corpse and the percussion akin to the pounding of a hellish army marching to end the light.
Though it is a no-frills album, there are touches of rhythmic heaviness and ritualistic horror which add some real atmosphere to the constant inhumanity.
Inhumanity that burns sharply in your mind. The constant blistering fury is Ofermod as focused as ever and few bands from this genre of metal can get away with such a constant assault these days. Ofermod demand your attention and respect, and with releases this evil, few people won’t be denying them it.
Harsh, hard and horror-laden. Like the best black metal should be.
