Album Review: Of Darkness – Missa Tridentina (Personal Records)
On August 25th internationally, Personal Records will release experimental funeral doom band Of Darkness’ highly anticipated second album, Missa Tridentia, on CD format.
Standing alone within the funeral doom genre because of their highly experimental and cinematic style, Of Darkness are both a mystery and revelation in metal. On the one hand, they create a cacophony of depressive and dark sounds through the familiar medium of heavy, blackened doom. On the other, they enrich the mind and soul with exciting and interesting use of effects, and orchestral arrangements.
The end result is certainly something that can be called ‘epic’. Provided you’re willing to delve into some very deep pits to experience it.
The darkness is so sludgy, the doom is so thick, the sense of constant pressure that comes from this music is downright horrible. Yet, because of all the layers and how Of Darkness shift the tones, it never reaches breaking point. This might very well be the most addictive example of funeral doom ever heard.
To enjoy the experience that is Of Darkness, you have to be an intrepid explorer willing to look in places most fear to. Where the gloom becomes suffocating, and no light can penetrate it. Dare you be such an explorer? The reward speaks for itself. Of Darkness might be something that sends a shiver down most spines but they stand alone as a unique offering in this constantly fascinating sub-genre of metal.
