Album Review: No Return – Live XXX (Mighty Music)

After three decades of career, it’s time for No Return to bring you, “Live XXX”, which is much more than a “simple” live record. With a chronological setlist, which traces the career of the French band from the debut album “Psychological Torment” (released back in 1990) to the latest “The Curse Within”, “Live XXX” was recorded in La Manufacture, in the French city of St. Quentin, in December 2019.

Guitar player Alain Clément comments:

“Live XXX” is the first live album in the history of the band. People have been asking us for it for a long time and we are very happy to finally be able to release it. We are very excited by the release of this live concert because it really shows the energy and aggressiveness of No Return on stage.

Live XXX will be released in digital and CD formats by Mighty Music on December 18th, 2020.

Serving as a first for long-time fans and as a glorious introduction to those who may have somehow missed No Return over the decades. Live XXX is the perfect kind of live album, where the raw thrashy power of the band is showcased cleanly but is also a history lesson taking us through 30-odd years of head-banging music.

Around 70 minutes of high-powered metal and frenzied thrashing, Live XXX has 15 track beginning with 1990’s Psychological Torment all the way through to 2017’s The Curse Within. Along the way tracks from Contamination Rises, Self Mutilation, Machinery, Self-titled, Manipulated Mind, Inner Madness and Fearless Walk to Rise get an airing. Although why Seasons of Soul gets skipped completely is a mystery.

Hardly a complaint though, when you look at the rich history of this band. History that pours from the excellent live power of the thrash maniacs. You’re listening to pros here, a band so confident at what they do and with a crowd lapping up every moment of it.
