Album Review: Nighthawk – Prowler (Mighty Music)
What do you get when you put Captain Black Beard, The Night Flight Orchestra, Soilwork, Metalite and Ginevra musicians in the most famous studio in the world recording AOR? You get Nighthawk! The new album, Prowler, will be released on the 12th of May 2023.
Unashamedly old-school rock ‘n’ roll, Nighthawk’s Prowler is the sound of a group of talented musicians paying tribute to the music they love, while having a lot of fun doing so. Don’t be under any false pretences, this album is AOR through and through, and there’s absolutely nothing experimental or genre-blending about it. So, if that thought is a complete turnoff for you, probably best you give this a miss.
Unless you’re looking for something you can have a boogie too. Which is one of the major appeals of the album. Especially as Nighthawk is made up of many talented individuals who have great chemistry with each other. Björn Strid (The Night Flight Orchestra, Soilwork & Donna Cannone) on lead vocals, Magnus Ulfstedt (Ginevra) on drums, John Lönnmyr (The Night Flight Orchestra) on keyboards and Christan Ek (Captain Black Beard) on bass. Talk about a motely collection of capable artists.
Hence why they can get away with delivering rousing covers of Kiss’ God of Thunder and Bruce Springsteen’s Cover Me. Nobody else could do either track justice.
If you feel like you need cheering up, you need something to put a bit of pep in your step, or you just feel like having some ‘easy listening’ rock and roll, Nighthawk have the remedy for you. It’s call Prowler and it’s hilariously AOR. There’s nothing here that can be called mind-blowing or even something with longevity, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t an absolute blast from beginning to end.
