Album Review: Nervochaos – Chthonic Wrath (Emanzipation Productions)

Brazilian death metal band Nervochaos will release their new album ‘Chthonic Wrath’ on March 31st, 2023, on digital and CD via Emanzipation Productions.

With 25+ years on the clock, Nervochaos are underground legends but steadfastly refuse to conform. Resulting in their name becoming synonymous with savagery and intensity. This new album, written during the pandemic because of the lack of touring, sees the five-piece as aggressive as ever. Delivering a brutish display of technically refined death metal across 14 tracks.

Fast and frenetic, the fury is prevalent from the start as Nervochaos come out with fists flailing and legs spinning on Son of Sin. Before flexing their technical muscles on the raging Chaos Prophets and the dark danger of Kill for Pleasure. The chunky instrumentation and scathing vocal style immensely appealing to all who like a coarse style of extreme metal.

There’s little time to take a breath as Nervochaos continue to spit acidic fury with Taphephobia. Although there are some interesting experimental touches here. Followed by 57 seconds of melody that comes in the form of Tomb Mold. Before it’s back to unbridled and unabashed harshness with Lullaby of Obliteration, Torn Apart, Arrogance of Ignorance, and Avant-garde. A series of tracks that expand upon the Nervochaos intensity in extremely interesting and exciting ways.

It’s quite impressive that the album remains so engaging as it reaches its twilight stages. Especially when you consider Nervochaos’ formula doesn’t get messed with much throughout. Heavy, in-your-face, and aggressive death metal which continues to please as Falling proves to be one of the more elaborate sounding bouts of heaviness on the entire album.

Leaving the final set of tracks; Descending Into Madness, Perpetual War, and Ouroboros to deliver excessive force. Ensuring the head has well and truly been banged into oblivion by time the short blast that is Weed Smoker’s Dream comes along to close the album out.
