Album Review: Nerve Saw – Peril (Testimony Records)

Testimony Records proudly presents the debut album of Finnish Death Metallers Nerve Saw! “Peril” is a hybrid of many things. It combines the no-nonsense approach of early punk albums to gnarly, brain melting death metal. Out on March 27th 2020.

The smash-mouth approach that Nerve Saw take to their brand of death metal gnashes and bites like a wild animal. From the moment A Fool kicks in, it’s clear this is going to be a fairly savage and very in your face kind of record.

After such a snarling and spitting start, Life Goes On… Not swings the hatchet delivering sharp cuts of old school death metal venom. No Lead keeps the noise short and very intense for one of the albums most ferocious listens although The Red Line doesn’t half try to match that. This is vile noise but the kind that is delectable in just how appealing it is.

Yes, it’s metal and yes, it’s nasty but Nerve Saw approach it with an almost tongue in cheek outlook. Delivering a combination of brutal sounds built on the foundation that heavy and fast is what is needed. Just take the punk-fire and chunky riffs of Ghosts in Dialogue or the much more refined and lengthier abuse that comes from Empty Hearts!

This is a debut that will turn heads. That much is sure and the latter part of the album certainly keeps them held high. A bunch of gut-punches in a row with Nails, Last Verse for the Buried, P.I.A.T. and The Eye of the Golem. Each one short, very sharp and very angry. Nerve Saw really spitting blood as they arrive at the final destination of Wolves of the 80’s. Feedback leads to an eruption of chaos, there are no surprises here as a finale but that’s not a bad thing.

A hell of a debut. Like having your teeth pulled out and enjoying every second of it.
