Album Review: Nephila – Nephila (The Sign Records)
Swedish psychedelic rock band Nephila is set to release their self-titled debut album on The Sign Records. Drawing inspiration from 60s and 70s folk and prog rock, Nephila consists of seven masked musicians that combine progressive songwriting and visual expressions to merge mysticism, folklore, and storytelling into a theatrical journey.
Nephila’s self-titled debut will be released on vinyl, CD, and digital formats via The Sign Records on June 4th, 2021.
Seriously retro rock with a cosmically progressive sound, Nephila are experimenting and experimenting hard on this debut. Seven tracks of 60s and 70s themed rock music dominated by two powerful vocalists. While they’re certainly not the first to draw from those periods and certainly not the first to give it a progressive spin, they certainly are one of the more captivating bands to do it.
Part of that captivation does come from the incredible vocals; sultry and sweet, eerie and dangerous, powerful and authoritative. It’s an authentic performance from a band that sounds suitably authentic to the eras of music they draw from. Though that’s not to suggest you’ve heard everything Nephila have to offer before. They’re very much their own thing, capable of delivering their own style with a modern cleanliness.
Groovy, energetic, catchy and weird enough to keep things interesting, Nephila prove themselves to be an exciting prospect. There’s nothing ‘game-changing’ here but that’s fine, it’s old-school progressive rock done well enough for that not to matter.
Music to dance too, music to chill out too and most importantly, music to rock out too.
