Album Review: Necronautical – Apotheosis (Candlelight Records)
UK black-metal outfit Necronautical’s latest offering ‘Apotheosis’ is set for release on 30th August 2019 through world-renowned extreme metal label Candlelight Records.
Apotheosis serves as a sonic epitaph to the human experiences of hope and faith. It details a melancholic journey through an empty and brutal existence, taking inspiration from the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, Chuck Palanuik and Neil Gaiman.
A savage style of black metal, Necronautical are a beastly bunch with the power and poise to drop anyone and everyone to their knees. Apotheosis is a beastly listen but not in a raw, somewhat unlistenable state. Instead it’s an album that has all the black metal trimmings with plenty of ferocity but wrapped up in a more modern and discernible way. It’s downright palatable while being heavy and brutal enough to please all fans.
As a taster, if you’re not sure, just check out the wonderful and methodical Nihil Sub Sole Novum. From the howling hellish vocals to impressive drum speed to the guitar flair, it’s a phenomenal listen.
Of course it’s not the only excellent track on this excellent album. Lure of the Abyss really gets under the skin with bursts of guitar soloing and a rhythmic drum beat that forces the foot to tap along. Totentanz is beautifully bleak while also having that black metal epic feel you might more associate with the likes of Rotting Christ.
Then there is the spectacle that is Down the Endless Spiral. Put a fist in the air while you gleefully accept that your soul is going to burn for all eternity in hell thanks to listening to music like this. Staggering…
