Album Review: Necrogod – In Extremis (Transcending Obscurity Records)

Necrogod is the perfect expression of atavistic death metal brutality spearheaded by none other than Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, Revolting, Eye of Purgatory) who has teamed up with the revered The Master Butcher (Morbid Stench, Insepulto) to make this feat possible.

In Extremis will be released on July 23rd 2021 via Transcending Obscurity Records.

It’s been a couple of months since we last checked on Rogga Johansson and here he is again. This time teaming up with The Master Butcher for one of 2021’s most extreme death metal albums.

In Extremis is caked in gore and filth but by God, is it impressive. 9 tracks of flesh shredding riffs, bone crunching bass and drums, and of course, the incredible vocal talents of The Master Butcher. Who sounds less like he is possessed by Satan and more like he kicked Satan in the balls and ripped his vocal chords out to use.

The aggressive intent is there from the start and aside from the occasional evil enhancing section here and there, it doesn’t stop. Evil enhancing because this album oozes wickedness and it is so damn encouraging.

It’s hard to say if this is either’s best individual work because of the sheer number of bands and projects they are and have been involved in. However, together on this album, they are reaching new heights (or lows) in what death metal can sound like.

In Extremis is the best kind of brutality. The kind that whips up a storm in the head and refuses to dissipate until you’re so dizzy, you’re begging for it to stop. You’ll feel this level of extreme in your soul.
