Album Review: NAG – Nagged to Death (Fysisk Format)
NAG is a three-piece metallic punk band hailing and howling from the Norwegian west coast, where the oil rush in the ‘60s and ‘70s provoked an existential shift from protestant self-denial to techno-optimistic hedonism. NAG, on the other hand, represents a return to the humility and resignation of generations past, back to a time when the steep mountains, the deep woods and the bottomless sea formed a living nightmare in people’s lives.
NAG consists of Arnfinn Nag, Espen Nag and Ørjan Nag (not counting honorary member, utopist and master of local lore, Martin Nag). Their new album, Nagged to Death will be released via Fysisk Format on the 23rd November 2018.
An album full of squealing feedback, punk sensibilities and hardcore energy. Nagged to Death is a massive ‘fuck you’ to any conventional expectations of extreme music. An album that is pure energetic fury showing that NAG don’t give a damn what you think.
After two fiery and short slaps to the head from Sigh and In the Know, it’s the title track and No Rest for the Blessed that opens up the door to the extremities of NAG’s sound. A pair of noisy tracks that showcase the pacey energy and punk vibes of the 3-piece.
The undercurrent of despair that exists through the album is a massive driving force of just why it’s such an enjoyable listen. NAG’s music feels desperate as time stands still on the likes of Black Wizards, Rainbow Children and Dumb Little Life. A trio that tell you all you need to know about the wild but structured style of this excellent album.
