Album Review: Murdryck – Födelsen (Leviaphonic Records/Growls From The Underground)
Mudryck entered the black-metal fold in 2014 upon reshaping from a dark-ambient sound into a fast paced, aggressive guitar-oriented band.
Murdryck begin 2019 with preparations for their follow-up album, Födelsen, and is scheduled for release on the 1st May 2019 through Leviaphonic Records (CD, cassette and digital) and Growls From The Underground (vinyl).
The frozen and hellish Winter has arrived, at a time when we least expected it. The wind picks up, cutting through flesh and bone. It whispers a name. That name is Murdryck and it brings death. In the form of eight sharp stabs to the body. Each one as wince-inducing as the last.
As twisted and evil as the album is, this is a surprise for those with a black metal presumption. It has got frothy depths, nuanced atmospheres and a focused approach to delivering brutality of the highest order.
After a particular violent start with Vålnad, it’s the title track that really shows off the smart, thoughtful and detailed black metal Murdryck has to offer. A really patient approach gives new appreciation for the howling chills they send out.
The Sea Spirit of the Night is surprisingly easier on the ears with clean guitars and a more intense focus on riffs. Something that Blood Sacrifice follows up with some serious catchiness. It’s such a surprise, a nice one but a surprise none the less.
With that out of their system, it’s back to cold and horrifying black metal with Black Plague Eclipse. A phenomenal listen, the drums hammering out a beat that amazes and the vocals howling like hellspawn.
A very good release comes to an end with Shadow Beings and Hymnens Svarta Toner. The former hammering out a ritualistic rhythm that is strongly rooted in both black and traditional heavy metal. The latter a track that gets the vocals as dark as humanly possible.
