Album Review: Movement At Night – Failed by Choice (Self Released)

A one-man band from Nice, France, Movement At Night combines influences from Anglo-Saxon indie rock, alternative, and pop punk. After the release of the EP ‘Sleep on It’ in 2021, Movement at Night returns with a new album entitled ‘Failed by Choice’. It will be released on September 15th, 2023.

With a ton of heart and soul, anthemic alt-rock and pop-infused punk rock tunes, and plenty of talent to capture the imagination, Movement At Night delivers an album to remember here.

Starting with the emotive, peppy, and grunge-tinged Way Out, the immediate feel is one of authenticity. There is no faking the feel and tone of this track, or the record overall. Something that will become even more prevalent as it goes on.

The first of three, Interlude No. 1 is a moody and subtle listen that leads into Strong as A Mountain, where a long and haunting introduction sets the mood nicely. Immediately, you can feel the emotion in this track, and as it transitions into something peppier, it just gets even more exciting. Yet, the emotion is ever-present. The blend of pop-punk energy, indie heart and soul, dramatic touches, elaborate ideas, and a big anthemic moment makes this one hell of a banger track.

Interlude No. 2 changes the tone by being eerie, before the full and rich flavour of indie rock explodes with Letter to Myself. The vocals are very impressive here, and the lyrical content will really hit home for many.

The powerful heartfelt vibes of the album continue into the infectious foot-tapper that is Give It a Try. A track that marries the old and new schools of punk rock impressively, has deep melodies, and features a very strong chorus. That then leads into Interlude No. 3, and true to form, Movement At Night makes this another notable lull with some strong atmosphere.

Talking of form though, Breathe is Movement At Night at its most melody driven. Where a relaxed poignancy transforms into passionate peppiness. It’s one of the longer tracks on the album, but the investment is paid off. Then it’s Counting Down the Days, the finale, and a pop-punk heavyweight that gets the feet tapping, the fingers drumming, and the soul soaring. A delightful finish to a delightful album.
