Album Review: Morgengrau – Blood Oracle (Unspeakable Axe Records)

Out of Texas comes Morgengrau, returning with their new album Blood Oracle. With a vicious approach reminiscent of Asphyx, Pestilence, Deicide and Celtic Frost, Blood Oracle is eight tracks of deep and classic sounding death metal. It will be released on June 22nd 2018 via Unspeakable Axe Records.

Morgengrau 2

The rumble of the riffs and the crash of the drums is what introduces the title track before the pace quickens and demonic vocals take control. An evil and ritualistic start, things get darker but more thrilling as Wolves of Thirteen and Progression take a firm, clawed grip on proceedings.

Poised at the Precipice of Doom is an apt title as the bass leads us towards the edge of darkness. A really fascinating start, it does disappoint by suddenly reverting back to the hyper-death metal sound heard elsewhere on the album.

There is little variation following with Forced Exodus, Invert the Marker and Evocation of the Wheel proving to be solid slabs of metal but hardly worth getting too excited about. There can be few complaints if all you’re looking for is 30+ minutes of head-banging metal, it’s just that Blood Oracle is unlikely to live long in the memory.
