Album Review: Mithridatum – Harrowing (Willowtip Records)
Featuring former members of Abhorrent and The Faceless, blackened/dissonant Death Metal trio Mithridatum will release its debut album, Harrowing, on CD, vinyl, and digital formats February 3rd, 2023 on Willowtip Records.
Showcasing a truly horrifying style of blackened metal, Mithridatum’s style of discordant and heavy music is incredibly harsh to the ears. Akin to abuse, the group seem to have been possessed by forces beyond human comprehension. Such is the level of unforgiving dissonance on show here. It’s black metal but warped by darkness that is liable to drive humanity mad should it ever spread from the hellscape it inhabits.
It’s an exceptional showcase of instrumental noise and vocal revulsion. Music to make you feel uncomfortable, anxious and fearful. Don’t let the five-track length fool you, this is a deep trawl into unrelenting realms of pain and suffering.
It should be enough to make even the hardiest of people run for their lives. Yet, Harrowing is a hypnotic listen. Snarling intensity, but structurally fascinating. Mithridatum have created something that is the sonic embodiment of unease. At no point will you feel comfortable hearing the warped and rigid blackened heaviness that this band spews out. It is truly staggering as there really isn’t anything quite like this experience.
Dare you press play? The gaping pit of darkness lies before you. Join Mithridatum on the descent into nothingness.
