Album Review: Mallus Spiritus – Vultures of Despair (Raging Planet Records)

After years of chaos, debauchery and total disorder, Portuguese black-metal duo Mallus Spiritus have decided to regather once again to release a new album titled ‘Vultures of Despair’. Raging Planet Records will release it on December 12th, 2022.

Not so pure to put off those looking for a bit of freshness in their black metal but not so experimental as to put off the traditionalists. Mallus Spiritus expel some demonic forces on their dark, bleak, and brash new album. An album that features ten tomes of nasty aggression and brutal heaviness.

The blend of howling horror, biting cold and inferno-style intensity makes the experience undeniably blackened but through sheer force of talent, showcasing more variety than expected, and delivering instrumental carnage, Mallus Spiritus stand out. No easy task when you deal in black metal and be under no false illusions, Vultures of Despair is a black metal album.

The excitement of hearing something so twisted and oozing evil vibes is high from the moment the title track kicks in. Here, Mallus Spiritus showcase their instrumental power and vocal expulsions in immense fashion. Adding small touches of atmosphere to make the experience even more interesting.

Excitement that continues as they set the scene ablaze with the chaotic fury of The Dead Star of Bethlehem, the wickedness of Shepherds of Deception, the horror-laden hellishness of Resume to Nothingness, and the furious blackened monstrosity that is Spiritual Deviations (Rituals of the Flesh). It is an album that really does deliver on its promises.

While it may not set the black metal world ablaze when it comes to experimentation, it does more than enough to make fans of the darker side of metal sit up and take notice. The return of Mallus Spiritus is certainly memorable.
