Album Review: Los Morts – Slasherpunk (We Are Horror Records)

Slasherpunk is the new, and third, album by Peruvian horrorpunk band Los Morts. It is due to be released on June 30th through UK label We Are Horror Records. It brings together the original line-up of the band, after 6 years, comprised of Occiso, Kaesar, Lugosi.

At its heart, Slasherpunk is a concept album. A new genre, which embraces slasher movies as a main influence.

There’s a.playful gothic fantasy feel to this new Los Morts album coming from the title track which serves as more of an intro to the album. It gets the juices flowing for some bloody horrorpunk and Los Morts certainly deliver as the first few tracks that follow set about slashing and smashing their way through the mind, body, and soul. Mort, Candyman, Jason Voorhees, and Ghostface. What is blood for, if not for shedding?

Iconic horror names given their personal body-quivering soundtracks via Los Morts. The highlight of this set of tracks being Ghostface in particular, as the synth adds some real catchiness to it.

It’s chainsaw mayhem time with Masacre en Texas as Les Morts get into the grime with a frenzy of synth and punk. Before Noche de Halloween goes back to the late 70’s, first with that iconic theme, then with Los Morts’ own take on the night he came home. Both tracks show just how much passion and love this band has for the horror genre.

Which does continue into the terrifying experience of Norman Bates. After all, mother knows best and she loves a bit of Los Morts. Followed by a nightmarish trip to Elm Street as Los Morts make sure they will be showing up in your dreams tonight. You gotta love the energy of this one.

Before the album wraps up with the lovable Sangriento San Valentín, Los Morts aren’t delivering a bloody heart in a box here though, they’re got horrorpunk at its most vigorous, and deliver a deep-cut of a reference with Rojo Profundo (1975’s Deep Red). The immersion of this entire album is top-notch.

Want some more? Pick up the version with the two bonus tracks and you’ll get more. Damballa, a track surrounding the Voodoo spirit that many may know from the Child’s Play/Chucky franchise. Los Morts are possessed by the sound of punk rock here. Then there is the bloody beating that Los Morts dishes out in the name of the Maniac Cop. Both tracks aren’t necessary listening, as the rest of the album is strong, but they’re both so enjoyable you will want to hear them.
