Album Review: Leatherjacks – Surviving the Beginning of the End (Self Released)

Hailing from Sao Paulo in Brazil, modern hard rock/metal project Leatherjacks is the brainchild of singer, writer, and multi-instrumentalist Mauro Cordeiro. The new album ‘Surviving the Beginning of the End’ will be released on June 23rd, 2023.

Leatherjacks rock, and rock hard. There’s no simpler way to put it. If you have experience with Mauro Cordeiro’s solo project already than you’re going to feel right at home with Surviving the Beginning of the End. Which isn’t to say that it’s just a rehash of everything we’ve heard before. Rather, it’s a continuation of what makes Leatherjacks so enjoyable, with plenty of fresh touches here and there.

From the excitable catchiness of Who Cowers Against the Law, to the vigorous rock and roller that is Baby Hit-And-Run, and the groovy, melody-tinged riffiness of The Last Will Be the First. Leatherjacks hook the listener in with the first third of the album.

A hook that digs in deeper with the moodier and more dramatic Mechanimals, the old-school rock tone of the title track, and the energised Dead and Gone. Mauro Cordeiro offering up a bevy of riffs, but also delivering strong vocals.

Somehow gets the second half of the album started with melodic aplomb, an acoustic guitar being the dominant feature. Before Miss Me When I’m Gone gets the blood pumping in the veins, and Ponce De Léon takes the listener back in time again, but stands out for its fiery chorus. It’s all good fun.

Fun that hits the ultimate high with the animated head-banger that is This Time It’s Do or Die. A track to get a speeding ticket to. Then along comes the robust anthem that is Love You Need. Before the album closes out with the grandiose Flying on Through the Stars. As stated at the start of this review, Leatherjacks rock, and rock hard. No more proof needed than this new album.
