Album Review: Laser Flames On The Great Big News – Laser Flames On The Great Big News (Wood and Stone Productions)

On June 30th 2017, Wood and Stone Productions will release the emotive, hook-laden hard rock self-titled album from Laser Flames On The Great Big News.

Laser Flames 1

After a groovy intro, Laser Flames on the Great Big News let their rock sound fly with the catchy & rhythmic 31 Years. The combination of both male & female vocals adds a real sultry style to the song & album overall. It’s an exciting opening song that gets better near the end with a nice, frantic sounding solo.

There’s a bit of the old-school sound about this self-titled debut but with a soft, alternative edge to the music. The melody throughout the excellent Lashes really strikes at the heart. It’s beautifully constructed, fast bursts with these lovely slower vocal led moments that stand out. The proggy guitars in the second half of the song change things around a bit & while it sounds good it lacks the memorability of the early part of the song.

There’s some really strong vocal performances throughout Laser Flames on the Great Big News, most noticeably near the end of Lashes & at the beginning of Open Dead and Doomed (the female side kills it here).

Only 6 songs long but coming in at 43 minutes long. It’s songs like the 12 minute Beloved that have a serious task on their hands. Hardly music that seems to fit tracks this long, it’s something of a surprise that the band offer such variety in sound. The long songs twist & turn starting out as one thing but ending up as something very different.

Ending on a serious high, Flame High confirms that the world of rock music has something very special here in Laser Flames on the Great Big News. Emotionally driven, the power of the duel vocal performance is at it’s strongest here.
