Album Review: Landmvrks – Lost In The Waves (Arising Empire)

Landmvrks are back with a vengeance. After successfully building their reputation through asserting their own style on 2018 masterpiece Fantasy, the band return both fresher and heavier than before with their third album Lost In The Waves. Due for release on 19th March 2021 via Arising Empire.

One of the most exciting modern metalcore bands, Landmvrks can always be counted on to deliver bangers. A band that is not afraid to push boundaries, something they once again do here (Visage jumps to mind). Lost in the Waves seems to be them really growing into their skins, finding their voices and ensuring that both old and new fans will come away satisfied.

Compact and concise, Lost in the Waves is a little over 30 minutes of passionate metalcore. Blending various ideas and some clever tricks to keep the momentum strong over 10 tracks. Beginning in breakdown heaven with Lost In A Wave, a frenzied pit opener that is the perfect example of their thirst for recognition. It’s a banger of a start.

Speaking of bangers though… Rainfall starts so fucking hot and doesn’t let up for even a second. Landmvrks at their wildest, the vocals are spat out at an insane pace and get so damn guttural at times. Insanity.

A bit of a breather is in order and Silent gives it (sort of) with a rockier start before kicking in hyperactivity that is more inline with what we’ve heard so far. However, a cleaner and groovier chorus with mellower tones that follow it, makes a nice change of pace.

It’s here we run into a possible polarising effort in the form of Visage. Where electronica beats and rap/soft singing take centre stage. It’s Landmvrks showcasing variety and of course, the track moves into a much higher and more metal gear after a bit.

If that previous one left you feeling a bit cold, Tired Of It All and Say No Word will warm things back up. The former with some nice mellow edges to the frantic instrumentation and with a ton of singalong quality to it. The latter a refocus on brutality with some of the heaviest guitars and drums heard so far. Vocally, it’s pure chaos.

Bouncier riffs, catchy singing and a less intense offering with Always is another surprise from a band that sure knows how to constantly deliver them. Shoreline is 34 seconds of the sound of waves and impending doom that serves an intro for the stunning ruthlessness of Overrated. A racing slab of metalcore noise with a pop-punkish chorus. That sounds like it shouldn’t work but holy hell, does it. Such is the talent and imagination of this band.

A landmark release for Landmvrks then comes to a close with the bands most powerfully melodic and mellow offering. Clean singing that soars high, emotive and effective, it’s a low energy finish even when they explode into life in the final minute, but is a perfect closer.

Brilliant. The sort of release that turns a band into superstars.
