Album Review: King Ov Wyrms – The Womb Ov Borealis (Self Released)
Blackened death metal band, King Ov Wyrms return with a salacious offering that trawls new depths following 2020’s ‘Lord Ov Thrones’. Called ‘The Womb Ov Borealis’, it will be released on October 6th, 2023.
Smartly, King Ov Wyrms are beginning to form their own identity and forge their own path within black and death realms. Choosing to reach into their own creative depths and pull out the ghastly innards of what their style of blackened death is. A style that delivers garish horror and unrelenting brutality in gargantuan fashion.
Every single track is a tome of heavy and epic proportions. Starting with the crawling and squirming repugnance that is In Aeons We Spoke. King Ov Wyrms set the bar extremely high with this opener and leave very little to imagination through sheer destructive force.
Smashing and crashing through the senses with very little care for the damage they do, King Ov Wyrms explode with furious intensity on the following Grave Ov Birth. Followed by Sulfur, a track that burns with hellish fire, the blackened sheen of the track balanced with guttural death intensity exceptionally well. Before the band make use of the bleakness that oozes from the best kind of black metal to suffocate the mind with Desolation Fog. As chaotic as it can be, it’s also a fine example of the King Ov Wyrms instrumental detail.
The Womb Ov Borealis certainly proves to be big step forward for King Ov Wyrms, their progression more and more evident as it goes on. The willingness to push the limits is more and more notable as To March from Darkness hits with all the force of a tidal wave, Illusory Veil brims with maggot-ridden rot, and Sightless Vision combines dark atmosphere and hellish heaviness impressively.
This level of consistent devastation could make the latter part of this album feel a bit ‘samey’ but King Ov Wyrms do a remarkable job of making each new tome sound fresh. There’s no further proof needs than the finale of What Time Has Wrought. A giant amongst giants, it is nearly fourteen minutes long, and the carnage created is staggering. Not just through the passion and power of their blackened death heaviness, but through the chilling melodic touches and expanding atmosphere. It’s one of the most creative tracks on an album filled with a striking amount of creativity.
