Album Review: Karmatik – Unlimited Energy (Self Released)
Karmatik are a melodic death metal band from Quebec in Canada! On May 3rd 2019 they will release their second full length album ‘Unlimited Energy’, produced by Christian Donaldson (The Grid Studio, Cryptopsy, Beyond Creation, The Agonist, Beneath the Massacre, etc).
Unlimited Energy…a telling title as Karmatik certainly have it to be firing out such fierce metal. From the moment Universal Life kicks off , it’s a seething pit of barking riffs, filthy groove, powerful guttural vocals and thumping percussion. Over nine tracks, Karmatik burn brightly with little sign of going out.
The first half gives us Tsunami Sanguinaire, a squealing beast with vocals powerful enough to rend flesh from bone. Black Sheep…Be Yourself with its almost jaunty like bass solo that erupts into death metal wildness. Vautours Sans Scrupules and its thrilling head-banging riffs before the instrumental Transmigration of Souls all but confirms the quality of this release.
There are few ‘slow’ bits, it’s just not what Karmatik do but the title track does give us a little bit of chilled out guitar rhythm. Although it does lead to a spectacular guitar solo.
The most ‘by the numbers’ track, one that is still really strong, turns out to Defeat or Victory. A head-banger but not perhaps not as memorable as what we’ve heard so far. Or what comes after with the pure unfiltered groove of Family Chaos and As Cells of the Universe.
When you think of death metal, it’s not Canada that jumps to mind. Karmatik are changing that and Unlimited Energy is certainly the right tool.
