Album Review: Jungle Rot – A Call to Arms (Unique Leader Records)

Now signed to the mighty Unique Leader Records, death metal legends Jungle Rot return with their new record A Call to Arms, released on the 13th of May 2022.

Over 25 years of Jungle Rot and still bristling with as much vim and vigour as found on their debut release. A Call to Arms is a love-letter to everything that has made Jungle Rot such a mainstay of the scene.

They’ve made a name bringing the masses release after release of unbridled and unforgiving death metal mixed with elements of thrash and crust punk. It’s what Jungle Rot do, and no-one would want them to do it any differently.

So, they haven’t, as A Call to Arms is every bit the monster you could hope it be. An expertly crafted expulsion of filthy head-banging inducing noise. Where every effort to show that Jungle Rot are showing no signs of slowing down has been made. In fact, A Call to Arms is the band digging down deep to release some demonic forces that only the modern times could produce.

Death metal has been through some highs and lows since Jungle Rot first came about but if there’s one thing that has remained constant, it’s the power this band has. A Call to Arms is a snarling and spitting flareup of ferociousness with a delightful number of riffs and even more hooks. From the moment it starts to the moment it ends, it delivers mayhem-inducing heaviness. A veritable example of pit-filling metal that will drive the masses wild.

High points? There’s too many to list them all but the opening salvo of the title track and Asymmetric Warfare gets the album off to a blistering start. Elsewhere, Death Squad is unrelenting crunchiness, Maggot Infested is a slice of old-school gold and Total Extinction is eye-gouging ruthlessness. Just a handful of examples that make this such a strong release.

The world is a better place when Jungle Rot release music this good.
