Album Review: JoeyDiabolic – Just Drive (Self Released)

Multimedia artist JoeyDiabolic takes a sharp turn from his post-goth industrial metal sound with the upcoming album Just Drive. Just Drive is a soundtrack exploring the musical landscapes of alternative rock, Americana, blues, rockabilly, new wave, goth, and southern rock. Just Drive releases on the 25th of August 2023.

Well, this is quite a tone-shift for JoeyDiabolic and it sure will cause some debate amongst fans. Many will love it, some may loathe it, but one thing everyone will be able to agree on is that it encapsulates the creative force that is JoeyDiabolic. Expect the unexpected and appreciate an artist that is as imaginative as JoeyDiabolic is.

Just Drive is a more personal release, and one that sees the artist offer up the passenger seat for us to travel the roads with him. A trip that takes us through a myriad of locales, each with its own individual soundtrack. There are moments of chill, moments of energy, moments of excitement, moments of tension, moments of groove, and so much more. Across fifteen tracks, JoeyDiabolic bares his soul.

The variety on show, the eclectic mix of ideas and styles, the blending of what he is known for, and willingness to experiment is what makes this album such an appealing and addictive listen. It’s called Just Drive and it might be the most apt title ever as it does conjure up images of jumping in a car and heading off down the road with this album blaring out of the speakers.

There are many highlights across the album’s 40+ minute runtime. Highlights that include the blend of melody and goth groove that comes from Big Empty Home, the moody and alternative electronica vibe of A Gentle Wind, and the morose and dramatic sound of Day of Rest (Scarlett).

How about the bassy thrum and animated goth-infused rhythm of Morphine Dreams? Or the wonderful sulky and laid-back vibes that come from Lost In You? Then there is the finale of Ambience in the Stars, a track to lean back too and lose yourself in. Wonderful music from a wonderful artist.
