Album Review: Jesus Piece – …So Unknown (Century Media Records)
…So Unknown is the highly-anticipated second album (and label debut) from the hardcore outfit, Jesus Piece. Out on April 14th, 2023, via Century Media Records.
Normally when a band kicks off their album in such a frenzy, we’d tell you to take a breath or something. Well, there’s no point here as Jesus Piece will knock all the air out of you with the insane brutishness of In Contraints. If you want to know just how intense this band and this album is, this is the track to do that.
Absolutely bristling with hardcore intensity throughout, the talented five-piece break bones and smash skulls from the first second to the very last.
Yet, for all the carnage they dish out, …So Unknown is a layered release and showcases Jesus Piece’s inimitable variety and ability to keep the focus where it needs to be. It’s why the raging torrent of heavy that is Fear of Failure, the maelstrom of pain that is Tunnel Vision, and the eruption of pandemonium that is FTBS hit so hard. On face value, you can enjoy the heavy mayhem but concentrate a little bit and hear the sounds of a talented band with plenty of ideas.
Ideas that they are more than capable of delivering on too. Which is why the expected ‘numbness’ that comes with being beaten over and over again, never sets in. Even when Jesus Piece throw out such a gargantuan effort as Silver Lining. This track alone is the best example of their developed sound that moves them beyond the hardcore label.
Though, if you’re more interested in short, violent, and feral efforts, Jesus Piece have what you need. The trio of Gates of Horn, Profane, and An Offering to the Night all barely passing the two-minute mark and delivering unrestrained speed and succulent intensity.
If you still feel capable of handling more of what Jesus Piece have to offer, and who bloody won’t, they have two more nasty numbers to offer here. Firstly, the beastly Stolen Life, which has some of the heaviest breakdowns of all. Then, secondly, The Bond. One last frenzy that will leave everyone feeling totally exhausted but super satisfied.
