Album Review: Jess and the Ancient Ones – The Horse and Other Weird Tales (Svart Records)
Groovy, occult & psychedelic rock band, Jess and the Ancient Ones will release their third album; The Horse and Other Weird Tales on December 1st 2017 via Svart Records.
The Horse and Other Weird Tales is a fun album that is packed with devilish rhythm & melody as Jess and the Ancient Ones takes the listener on a dark trip to the sixties. Hip swaying, upbeat tracks like Shining, Your Exploding Heads & Return to Hallucinate absolutely nail the sixties sound but filtered through a modern band’s style. A lot of this is because of vocalist Jess, who is simply sublime.
You and Eyes is one of the album’s best offerings. The riffs playing off the memorable bass strumming in a more subtle way with brief injections of pace.
At only 35 minutes long, the album is over very quickly with tracks just flying by in a blur of occultist rhythm & melody. Minotaure’s upbeat rockiness is short & sweet before the longest track of the album, Anyway the Mind Flows ends things sweetly & darkly.
A extremely good album that drips occult sixties atmosphere.
