Album Review: Into the Deep – Blackfin (Self Released)
Dive metal outfit Into the Deep release their brand-new album, ‘Blackfin’, on January 3rd, 2024. An album that is entwined in metaphors and oceanic imagery, traversing different watery plains in a commentary on the personal and political trials in our modern life.
Offering up a unique blend of sounds and inspired by ocean ecology and conservation, oceanic wildlife, waves, and nautical craft. Into the Deep are a bit of a sensory overload band, and prove that the continuing amalgamation of genres can be startlingly good. Beginning this six-track album with a heady, groovy, and riffy bang, the title track is fantastic. Into the Deep sound so thick and heavy, but also have an anthemic quality that just hits so right.
That’s just the start though, and with bundles of talent and imagination, Into the Deep drag the listener deeper into the dark depths with the heavy drama of Sandblasted. Before the hints that this album might have moments that are more melodious is fully realised with Seaweed. Where clean singing and unusual effects give this track a unique feel. Into the Deep showing just how unfathomable their sound can be.
The heavier, energetic, and groovier thickness is back with aplomb thanks to the thrilling Spaceshark. Into the Deep absolutely nail this side of themselves and for many, it will be up there as their favourite track on the album. Even if the punchier drum beats and grubbier riffs of Nothing are extremely enjoyable too.
It’s just the make-up of this album. Each and every track hits hard and showcases variability in the sound of Into the Deep. Which means there’s simply no complaining about the choppy riff work, head-banging drum beats, and scathing vocals of the hefty finale that is Hammerhead. Great stuff overall from Into the Deep.
