Album Review: Intercepting Pattern – The Encounter (Rising Nemesis Records)

German-based progressive metal aliens Intercepting Pattern are proud to announce their upcoming debut album, The Encounter, which will be released on Friday, September 4th via Rising Nemesis Records.

There’s an ugliness to Intercepting Pattern’s aggression on The Encounter, only offset by the weirdness that comes from the progressive side of the band. The two together create something that…well, it takes some getting used too.

After a puzzling start with Extragalactic Radio, Signal-to-Noise massively improves things. The sharpness of the guitars and pointed vocals, everything covered with a fuzzy kind of electronica, really works.

From that, straight into the first of two Interludes, that helps create the imagery of futuristic spaciness, Intercepting Pattern like to keep things moving at a brisk pace. Eigenlicht is an absolute flurry of noise though. Jagged guitars and sharp jazz-like notes, it’s another uber-oddity that is sure to split opinion. The bassy chill latter part won’t change that either especially as we go from that directly into Hypnagogia. Which is where many may question if this album is just too weird for them.

The second Interlude is next, a chance to take a deep breath before heading back out into the ether where Rebiogenesis awaits. The ugliness is front and centre and Intercepting Pattern are making sure you stare it right in the face.

Fuga Finalis continues the mad fusion of jazziness mixed with savage fury and Asmodeus, the ravings of Intercepting Pattern’s feverish dreams.

It’s with some relief that the album is over with Epilogue but it would be a lie to not say there isn’t a strong temptation to hit play again just so you can be transported to the mad world this band inhabits.
