Album Review: Inner Missing – Dead Language (Inverse Records)
Russian gothic doom metal band Inner Missing will release their ninth studio album ‘Dead Language’ on February 25th 2022 via Inverse Records.
Doom metal but not quite as you know it. Inner Missing layer their methodical heaviness and thumping tomes with eerie and sinister gothic tones. Focusing on melody and clear vocals, the opening title track is a dark and melodic epic.
The strong gothic vibes are ever-present throughout The Quest, even if Inner Missing hit a little harder here. The near-spoken word style of the vocals has a sermonic quality to them making you sit up and pay close attention to them. Well worth it too as lyrically, Inner Missing are quite captivating.
Empty Rooms is one of the strongest tracks on the album though, with a really gothic 80’s heavy metal feel warped by Inner Missing’s doom edge. The instrumentation gets notably heavy here and the inclusion of different backing vocals here and there sounds great.
With renewed energy and plenty of life, Long Odds ominous drops are eclectic but the track’s technical sharpness makes this another class listen. Before Mute mixes cold melody with abrasive jabs and At Sea creates doomy gothic atmosphere tinged with lingering airiness and the strong sense of an ending.
You can call Dead Language ‘gothic doom’, because it is, but it’s more than just that. Inner Missing have a fair bit of imagination and it comes through in spades on this release.
