Album Review: In This Moment – Godmode (BMG)

There’s no halting In This Moment’s momentum and drive as new album ‘Godmode’ arrives on October 27th, 2023, via BMG. Godmode is the alternative rock band’s eight album, and it comes at a transformative time for the band.

The group have developed and evolved over their many releases, and the culmination of this part of the journey is Godmode. Yet, as is so often the case with this band, they’re well and truly looking to the future too. Expect the unexpected with this band, and then you won’t be surprised. Especially when they kick of this album with the cinematic tone of the title track. Taking the listener back to the 90s, it is stompy percussion what hits here. Yet, it’s also one of the more off-kilter tracks on the album, where the intensity constantly threatens to boil over.

Then there is The Purge. A track that has heavy industrial groove-based verses and an airy, but catchy, melodic chorus. How about that lengthy roar in the latter part of the track? With the crashing instrumental work, it’s one of the heaviest parts of the entire album.

How about a cover of Bjork’s Army of Me. One of the world’s most eclectic artists covered by a band who are more than willing to showcase their eclectic style too. It’s a unique cover that In This Moment certainly make their own

That willingness to experiment is key to this album’s appeal, yet In This Moment are an anthemic band too. Doing an impressive job of challenging listeners with tracks like Sacrifice, Skyburner, and Sanctify Me, but also ensuring listeners will struggle to forget these efforts any time soon. Vocalist Maria Brink is sounding particularly immense so far.

Then there is Everything Starts and Ends With You, a track that has soul-raising melodic passion and vigorous rock groove. Before In This Moment team up with the ‘hotter than hell’ Ice Nine Kills’ vocalist Spencer Charnas for the track, Damaged. A chance for everyone to go a bit wild for the album’s most animated effort.

Fate Bringer is the penultimate track, and will get some bodies well and truly shaking, before the album wraps up with I Would Die for You.

It shouldn’t need repeating, but if you didn’t know, In This Moment are a very big band and the proof is that this track featured on the John Wick: Chapter 4 soundtrack. Albeit, given the full album treatment. It is an enthusiastic blend of dramatic melody and cinematic heaviness, with a chorus that is disgustingly appealing.

A fun way to end another album that is sure to blow up. There’s no touching In This Moment right now, and their only going to continue to dominate the alternative scene when they’re releasing music like this. Even if you’re not a fan, it’s impossible to deny the fact that Godmode will appeal to so many different tastes. That is the key to success and it’s something In This Moment are very good at.
