Album Review: In Hearts Wake – Kaliyuga Booster Pack (UNFD)

Australian metalcore heavyweights In Hearts Wake will release the ‘Kaliyuga Booster Pack’ on February 11th, 2022 through UNFD. Kaliyuga Booster Pack is the deluxe edition of their acclaimed 2020 album Kaliyuga. It features new songs and a variety of live tracks recorded in Brisbane earlier this year.

We’re not going to be reliving the detail of the Kaliyuga album here. If you’ve not heard it already, go listen to it. It’s a banger and if you want to know more you can click here to read our review of the album.

Instead, we’re focusing only on the tracks that appear on this deluxe edition/booster pack. Three new ones and 5 live ones. Up first is Dogma and excitingly, it features the talents of Alpha Wolf.

An explosive and in your face blast of metalcore, Dogma is a sharp and aggressive track, all about dogs, with a chorus that you just want to be part of. The chant is infectious, the buzzsaw riffs are tight as hell and the breakdown is pure chaos.

The other two new ones are War and Torn in Two. The former’s symphonic sound is interesting, but the pacing of this track is where it’s at. It constantly feels ready to detonate and when it does, it gets a little strange but in a very creative way. The latter is out and out fiery metalcore with a chorus that just falls a little flat if we’re honest.

It’s quite a unique selection of new tracks to offer with the standout being Dogma for sure.

Then it’s all about the live tracks as In Hearts Wake bring us five tracks featured on Kaliyuga but from their Tivoli show. The electronica dance beat intro of Crisis, followed by the chaotic and blistering noise of Worldwide Suicide, the groovy power of Timebomb, the volatile but endearing Son of A Witch and the memorable catchiness of Hellbringer.

We have always said that when listening to ‘live’ tracks on a release, the rawer it sounds, the better. We don’t want to hear an immaculately produced recording… that’s what studios are for. We want to hear the roar of the crowd; we want to hear the reverberations and nuances that you can only get in the live environment. That’s what we get with these tracks and you can easily imagine yourself as part of the heaving, sweating masses that were going nuts for In Hearts Wake.
