Album Review: Ì Myrkri – Drivende i Dødens Æter (Wolfspell Records)
With the success of their debut album ‘Black Fortress of Solitude’, Ì Myrkri returns with their 2nd full length ‘Drivende i Dødens Æter’. Due to be released on February 29th by Wolfspell Records on CD.
The mind behind the project, Simon Gardarsson has developed Ì Myrkri’s style into an even harsher and greater sound. The mix between classic sounding riffs and epic atmospheres, surely give this album an old-school and haunted feel to it. Vocalist Lane Chaplin also developed his sound to fit with the new musical approach, with distant and haunted screams, he gave this album the last touch it needed.
The lyrical theme dwells into the oblivion, the state between life and death, and the mystical atmosphere of forgotten forests and what dwells within.
As black metal as they come, but one with an eerier and darker ambience, Ì Myrkri impressive on this sophomore release. Five tracks of head-busting heaviness blended near perfectly with emotionally touching atmosphere to give it a much richer and deeper edge.
It’s a pretty wonderful release, one where getting lost in the wailing noise is so easy to do. The howling vocals drift through the mind while the guitars and drums keep things well and truly weighted down. It’s very heavy but the atmospheric elements give it lightness too. There’s a sense of floating while listening to Drivende i Dødens Æter, like an out of body experience where you can still see the tether holding you from disappearing into the void.
Brilliant.
