Album Review: Holocausto Canibal – Crueza Ferina (Selfmadegod Records)

Crueza Ferina, meaning ‘ferocious cruelty’, is the sixth full length album from legendary Portuguese purveyors of extremity, pioneers of brutality, Holocausto Canibal. It will be released on May 27th, 2022 via Selfmadegod Records.

Nineteen tracks long. Nineteen tracks of some of the most horrifying and savage sounding death/grind. Holocausto Canibal make it clear from the start, with the panicking squeals of a pig, that this is not for the faint-hearted.

That being said, it’s not unlistenable and comes with some surprises. Holocausto Canibal are a talented bunch and that oozes out, like thick blood seeping down an abattoir drain.

As off-putting as the sight of nineteen tracks based in this kind of heavy music might be, Crueza Ferina is far more palatable thanks to the short and sharp way in which it is delivered. This is a frenzy, hopped up on adrenaline and with a bloodthirstiness, Holocausto Canibal attack. A beating that leaves you bloodied, dazed and in serious need of medical attention. Even if you think you won’t be affected, the continued aggression inevitably wears you down.

So many tracks and so much brutality, it’s hard to pick out individual efforts that stand out more than the others. However, there are few that really perk the ears up. Of course, the opener of Ad Bizarrem Morem, but also the thick riffing that comes in Ávida Tragação is really strong too. Then there is Anátemas Nefandos, a 38-second blast that makes the hairs on the body stand up, the absolute head-banger that is Prenúncios da Vingança Cavicórnea and the beastly, Campas do Negro Breu.

It’s so impressive that so many tracks stand out and certainly proves Holocausto Canibal are cut from a different piece of flesh.
