Album Review: Heptaedium – The Great Herald Of Misery (Apathia Records)
The Great Herald Of Misery by electro/tech-metal band Heptaedium will be released May 25th 2018. The project of French solo artist Florent Lambert, a musical experimentalist mixing industrial samples, synthesizers, and math-metal style riffs.
Don’t let the inclusion of samples and synths fool you, The Great Herald Of Misery is a heavy as hell record. The blazing pace setters of Watch Me Break the Necks Of the Hypocrites and Spill Torrents of Carcass’ on the Ground and Piss On Them are all the proof you need.
Complex riffing and roaring vocals backed up by thumping bass heavy drums all while the synth/samples make things stand out that little bit more even though they’re not at the forefront of the record.
When they are more prominent it’s to break down the crushing heaviness a little and never overshadows the invention on display.
That’s what The Great Herald Of Misery is, an album of invention. Even when just going balls out heavy it results in a really complex but enjoyable listen such as on I’m a Symmetric Mass of Hate. The standout track of the album.
It’s followed by the instrumental experiment that is Trapped in a Gravitational Abyss, a track that sheds some light on to the darkness with some soft melodies. A moment to catch your breath before the 8-minute brutal beast that is I’m the Great Herald Of Misery arrives to destroy everything you hold dear.
Yes, Heptaedium are something special. Combining elements that often don’t result in really interesting music but don’t pose a problem for them. The Great Herald Of Misery is a great album.
