Album Review: Hellripper – Coagulating Darkness (Self Released)

The one-man blackened death/speed metal project, Hellripper released Coagulating Darkness in April 2017. Eight tracks that take the listener to Hell & back.

With a furious roar, Coagulating Darkness lets rip with all its might. Hellripper are here to send a message, one built around a wicked blend of traditional heavy metal riffs & death/blackened metal vocals. Bastard of Hades is blazing hot blast of high-tempo rhythmic metal. Transfixing in its feverish delivery.

With that opening you know exactly what you’re getting with the following 7 tracks. Fast paced metal packed with plenty of riffs, hooks & screaming solos. Tracks like Anneliese fire off a guitar solo as if it’s the easiest thing in the world. It also helps that they are horn-throwing, head-banging perfection.

The constant & unrelenting pace would get tiresome, something that Hellripper are definitely aware of seeing as the 8 tracks end up equalling less then 28 minutes long. This short of an album, its very hard to not enjoy every second of it.

The highlight comes at the mid-point of the album with the fantastic snarl & bite of Within the Everlasting Hellfire. It’s quickly followed by the twisted blast of fiery metal that is From Hell, a throwback song if there ever was one.

The short high tempo Black Invokation is a chance for the riffs to really take centre stage before the penultimate track, Conduit Closing goes even further with the speed metal vibe. Super fast & super heavy.

Coagulating Darkness comes to a close with the title track. The longest of the album & from the moment it gets going it’s easy to see why. A slower paced & mood-altering intro merges into furious drumming. All of Hellripper’s energy & passion is thrown into this blast of angry metal resulting in a finale that is likely to make you sweat.
