Album Review: Heavy Feather – Mountain of Sugar (The Sign Records)

Roots rockers Heavy Feather are finally back with new music! Their upcoming sophomore album Mountain of Sugar will be released by The Sign Records on April 9th, 2021.

Influenced by the rock sound of the 60s and 70s, Heavy Feather are a bit of a time capsule. No doubt if you’re of a certain age, you’re going to be having some serious nostalgic flashbacks here. Whereas if you’re younger, you can experience the modern production of the sort of music your parents (or grandparents) grew up on!

Does it sound dated? Well, yes but that’s kind of the point. This is every bit the rock throwback it promises be. From the wide-ranging riff work to the bluesy vocal style to the chilled-out body-swaying groove. It is exactly what it says it is and that’s not a bad thing.

The star of the show is vocalist, Lisa Lystam who delivers a masterclass in poise and power. Captivating at times (Bright in My Mind), demanding at others (Too Many Times), fragile and heartfelt at others (Let it Shine). She is an exceptionally strong singer and a major asset to this unit. Although the riff work of guitarist Matte Gustavsson is a close second.

Dust off those hippie clothes, wrap that band around the head and pretend you’re rocking the hair you had back then. Sit back, chill out and enjoy a bluesy rock nostalgia trip.
