Album Review: Hawxx – Earth, Spit, Blood and Bones (Self Released)

Hawxx hail from Greece, Italy, Wales, and England, and songs about oppressive beauty standards, mental health struggles, violence against women, and self-empowerment. This is more than just a band, it’s a necessary vehicle of catharsis, love and rage. As a feminist band it is Hawxx’s aim to be a part of the changing landscape of the rock and metal world and for their gigs to be a brave space with women, trans and non-binary people at the centre.

It’s now time for them to unleash their debut full-length album, ‘Earth, Spit, Blood and Bones’, which is out on November 3rd, 2023, via Century Media Records.

It’s easy to fall for Hawxx based off their messages, but when you couple that with their anthemic hard rock and heavy metal ways, then most will be head over heels with just one listen of this debut album. The four-piece have already built a formidable name for themselves, thanks in part to their incredible live performances, but this is definitely their full and defiant arrival.

Kicking off with a body shaker and a head-banger, Hawxx set the bar high with Death Makes Sisters of Us All. Get used to hearing banger choruses, an excessive amount of passion, and emphatic statements that everyone should be listening too, because this is the Hawxx way. Continuing to delight with the vigorous hit of heavy rock that is The Worst Thing and the technically charged and melody driven Reckless. Hawxx making a point to show that they have plenty of variety to their sound too.

Though there’s nothing wrong with some out and out, sweaty and manic groove, and that’s what the infectious Embrace Your Ugly offers. A track that is going to be fire in the live environment.

Hitting the halfway point of the album, Hawxx lean harder into their melodic ways with Trust Your Rage. The vocals are extremely powerful here and it’s hard to not come away unaffected by the lyrics. This genuineness is characteristic of the band as a whole, so it’s very easy to stay invested in what they are doing. Well, that and banger tracks like If Not Now Then When, Filth, and Bite. Hawxx’s vibrancy has fully flourished by this stage of the album.

Yet, it’s not quite done yet as Soulbreaking Machines combines erratic expulsions, dreamy melodic tones, and a chorus that buries itself deep in the brain matter. Before the album closes out with Fathertongue, a track that begins in unexpected fashion, but transforms into a brash rocker that oozes passion.

Hawxx have arrived, revealing an album that is going to take the world by storm, delighting old and new fans alike.
