Album Review: Grind-O-Matic – Regular Singularity (Grind-O-Records)
Playing a technical and progressive type of grindcore, Paris, France based band, Grind-O-Matic released their new album called Regular Singularity on January 26th 2018.
When you think of progressive metal and grindcore, they’re not two sub-genres that sound like they should or could fit together. Well no-one told Grind-O-Matic as Regular Singularity is 12 tracks of complex and technical music blended with speed, ferocity and snarling brutality.
Big Sister, Nutcracker, The New Grinders, Ignorance Day…the first handful of tracks let you know exactly what you’re in for. A blend of meaty nastiness, horrifying heaviness and enlightening technicality.
The mash-up of noise is an assault on the senses as each track that comes is layered with such complexity that it will take many listens to really take in all that Grind-O-Matic have to offer.
There’s a touch of the futuristic and sci-fi to later tracks. The excellent Smart Jacuzzi, the raging iOX and The Love Bot show that Grind-O-Matic have more than just fire running through their veins.
Keeping things mostly short the album is over fairly quick but it doesn’t leave you feeling unsatisfied. In a surprising turn, they close out the album with the 9 minute epic that is A.I. Naturally it’s the most complex of the album but even though it lacks that short, fast and in your face attack that makes up the rest of the album, it’s not lacking in bite. A methodical pace allows the band to stretch themselves a bit more with even guitar soloing thrown in.
Awesome stuff.
