Album Review: Greyhaven – This Bright and Beautiful World (Rude Records/Equal Vision Records)

US progressive post-hardcore quartet Greyhaven are back, ready to shed light on life’s darkest areas with their new album ‘This Bright and Beautiful World’, due for release on the 15th April 2022 via Rude Records (UK/EU) / Equal Vision Records (ROW).

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and a lot of the time; those eyes will be focused on Greyhaven and what they produce on This Bright and Beautiful World. A 10-track behemoth that creates a whirlwind of emotions while being stupendously intense and scathingly liberal.

From the explosive start of In a Room Where Everything Dies, you know you’re in for something pretty special. Greyhaven flaring up in destructive fashion and showcasing a measured level of ferociousness. All Candy then shows some of the more mellow elements that put Greyhaven in the post-hardcore camp but focusing on an energetic and eclectic rhythm. Before A Painful and Necessary Action combines what we got in the first two tracks for something truly spectacular and gripping. The wild progressive sound of the guitars, alongside vocals that spit, snarl and comfort at the same time, is captivating.

It’s time for something with a chaotic start in the form of More and More Hands, where Greyhaven almost seem to take inspiration from noise-rock. The track shifting as it goes on, the band creating even more heartfelt moments and blistering slams.

Of Snakes and Swans then follows that with one of the dirtiest sounding tracks, the guitars delivering an eye-watering bevy of progressive riffs. Then, Greyhaven deliver banger after banger. Starting with Foreign Anchor, which is a pure adrenaline rush. Fed to The Lights is a heavy blast of post-hardcore melodrama. The Quiet Shakes has some incredible stompy vibes but again, the sharpness of those guitars cut through everything and the vocals are spitting utter venom. Before the penultimate track, And It’s Still Too Loud shows that this level of passion will never get old.

The icing on the cake? The massive and earnest finale of Ornaments from The Well. Where a relaxed melody and smooth vocals transitions into something with even more post-depth than heard so far.

An album most will be playing over again and again.
