Album Review: Gravehill – The Unchaste, the Profane & the Wicked (Dark Descent Records)
Southern California death metal veterans Gravehill return on March 16th 2018 with their fourth album (first since 2014’s Death Curse) The Unchaste, the Profane & the Wicked. The album will be released by Dark Descent Records.
Blazingly heavy, Gravehill come screeching out of the blocks as if they’re on fire. Bestial Genesis, Iron and Sulphur & The Unchaste are a trio of tracks that showcase a death metal style that is feral but structured with plenty of rhythm & the occasional sharp hook.
Strong guitar riffs, thrashy drums & throaty vocals unite to make a distinguished listen especially with tracks like Plague Hammer & Sabbatic Whore causing absolute devastation in their wake.
If there is one flaw with The Unchaste, the Profane & the Wicked it’s simply that it’s not bringing anything that new to the table. Occasionally there’s a little something; a little guitar lick, a shift in tone or a smart tempo change but for the most part, it’s box-ticking. It just so happens Gravehill are great at it.
The latter half of the album shows some solid growth from the death metallers. Seemingly increasing in confidence, The Wicked & D.I.E. providing two final, worthy tracks of crunching metal.
You can’t go wrong with this level of death metal & Grave Hill have certainly proved they can deliver solid & impactful results.
