Album Review: Grant The Sun – Voyage (Mas-Kina Recordings)

Norway’s Grant the Sun will release their first full-length album ‘Voyage’ on June 9th via Mas-Kina Records. The first Grant the Sun record to incorporate vocals.

Grant the Sun with vocals? Well, that’s unexpected and exciting. After all, we’ve been following this band for quite a while now. Enjoying their previous three EPs; self-titled, Simmar Ur Bild, and Sur Jupiter. So, had they carried on as usual, we wouldn’t have complained.

However, we’re not complaining about this new direction either as it’s added an extra ace to Grant the Sun’s hand, and they always have a strong one. Their brand of dreamy, dramatic, and deep progressively-tainted post rock and metal is enchanting stuff, and it’s all on full display here. Grant the Sun taking the listener on a sprawling journey of complex melody and groove across eight tracks.

It’s not easy to categorise this band at the best of times, and Voyage makes that even harder. It is a soundscape that encompasses so much that the best way to describe the experience is to talk about feelings. To talk about how Voyage makes you feel, and it will make you feel, even if sometimes it’s the urge to let loose and head-bang a bit.

A good example of the enigmatic scope of this record is the dichotomy in sound when it comes to tracks like Blue Desert, Machina, Mariana, and Seadevil. Everything on this album is a unique slice of progressive sensations and characteristically unpredictable. You’ll feel smarter listening to it, but still be thoroughly entertained by the emphatic stamp of heavy rock and groovy metal that Grant the Sun puts on everything.

Four releases deep, three EPs and now this album, and it seems as though Grant the Sun have found their perfect sound. Even though they were pretty damn good before. While this album might be about depths, there’s no doubt that Grant the Sun are soaring high now.
